The Originals

The Originals #42

"I dunno if I like the idea of this?"

There went Bex hugging herself in the thin white tee of mine that fit like paint edging up her baby bump. Her face was all scrunched up with disgust.

Of course, she hadn't huffed and puffed with Augustus and me, to get the huge bed up to her room. I swear, that thin stairwell is a killer. No way, was this bed going anywhere.

We'd gotten a free crib, as well. It seemed a couple had split and they needed someone to take the bed and the crib so they could leave town. Actually, they were in a squabble over it for sometime, but I didn't want to mention to Bex how we got the deal. But Gus can be a sweet talker when he wants to be.

Naturally, the bed and the crib took up most of Bex's room, but it was doable. We weren't made of money, but then we weren't living in boxes, either.

"Come on, give it a try. Not like, someone died in it, you know." I didn't mean to be perturbed, but it took most of my day off to get this done. I'd have to pull a double shift tomorrow. I plopped down and smoothed her a place. Luckily sheets were included and they were a bit spiffy.

She heaved as if it were just wrong, but finally she managed to sit. Although, she looked kind of sad.

"Don't cry now." I probably wailed. Every little thing could set her off in tears. A TV commercial, a baby on the street. I just didn't know what it was that set off the water works. "Sorry." I bit my bottom lip.

She took my hand and her satin hair fell on my shoulder as she leaned on me.

"I don't want things to change." She pouted.

"It has to. No way, getting around it." I looked at her growing belly. "Do you want that babe to still be in your belly when you're 32?"

She smiled with a chuckle and her belly jiggled as if the thought it were a good joke, too.

"The bed is in the attic." Her bed was not gone for good.

I looked down at the old faded jeans she was wearing. They were not mine. God knows, I could barely fit in my own these days.

"Who's pants are these?" I squinted.

"My Dad's." Her smile soon faded.

She never spoke of him. I didn't want to upset her. I kissed her sweet lips. Soon we were sprawled out on the bed. We kissed more, slowly, knowing what each other wanted. Just this. I kept my eyes closed, thinking of blue skies. It wasn't long until I was asleep.

Yes, it was heaven.
